What do you do when cancer sneaks up and sucker-punches you from behind? If you are Jimmy Capuano, born and raised on New York's lower east side, you come back at it with a whole lot of attitude, and both fists flying. Then you tell your story.
James Capuano's Beast delivers the author's highly idiosyncratic, inspiring and informative take on his diagnosis of Stage IV colon cancer, and his long journey to remission. In the end, Capuano's message is this: No matter how hopeless or dire a situation may seem, nothing is inevitable, and the will - no, the conviction - to fight counts for a hell of a lot.

Nothing about cancer is funny – so why did I laugh so hard at James Capuano’s personal story about his struggles with Stage 4 colon cancer? Simply put: because it’s hilarious. Never one to run away from the truth, his in-your-face account tells it like it is, providing valuable insight into how this disease affects not only the body and the mind, but also family and friends. ... a surprisingly life-affirming tale.
- Susan Sarandon, actress (The Big C, Thelma & Louise, Bull Durham, Lorenzo's Oil)
The funniest book about cancer you will ever read. Capuano manages to humanize his harrowing journey without bathos and yet I still walked away crying, with tears of sadness and laughter. No mean trick. ... A memoir both tender and hard for the healthy and the sick.
- David Duchovny, actor (Californication, The X Files)
Thank God Jimmy Capuano got cancer or we never would've known what a great writer he is! His book is one of the great balancing acts in recent literature - harrowing, hilarious, heartbreaking, and, most of all, human. I loved it!
- Peter Farrelly, writer/producer (Shallow Hal, There's Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber)
Jimmy Capuano has written a compelling, no nonsense account of his grueling battle with cancer. He pulls no punches, and in facing down death, he provides us with a wonderful affirmation of life.
- Drew Nieporent, Restarateur (Tribeca Grill, Nobu, Corton)
Armed with New York attitude and a salty vernacular that could make George Carlin blush, Jimmy Capuano takes on Stage 4 colon cancer with both fists flying. Honest, open, visceral and ridiculously funny, Capuano's memoir manages the feat of demystifying a horrible condition, humanizing a wrenching treatment and illuminating the path to achieve hope, humanity and dignity in the face of a terrifying disease.
- David P. Kirchoff, Author of Weight Loss Boss and CEO of Weight Watchers International, Inc.
[James Capuano's Beast is] always serious, sometimes heart breaking, occasionally poignant, and often belly-achingly funny. ... A powerful account of one man’s journey, facing his fears head on in whatever form they take, and overcoming them. ... A tale that is less about survival and more about redemption.
- Tony Shepherd, Chief Operating Officer, Protravel International
